FAQ Departmental student representative committee

Where can I find you?

The student council room is located in room W9-108. You can just drop by there. There is often someone there. In any case, you can always meet us when we have a student council meeting. You can find the date on the home page. You can also write an email to fswima (at) uni-bielefeld.de at any time.

What are you doing?

As the departmental student representative committee for Mathematical Economics, we primarily represent the interests of the WiMa students. We sit on various committees (such as the faculty conference, the student advisory board or the meeting of all departmental student representatives), where we stand up for your wishes and demands and try to improve your studies. In addition, we help organise and carry out various events, such as the freshers' days, the summer festival or company presentations. A central part of the departmental student representative committee's work is the weekly departmental student representative committee meeting, in which we come together as a departmental student body and discuss current news.

Can I join you?

All students are welcome to join us - regardless of whether they are in their first Bachelor's semester or already in their last Master's semester. Just talk to us or come directly to a student council meeting and have a look!

FAQ Bachelor Mathematical Economics

Which subjects should I take in the first semester?

In the first semester, the courses Analysis 1 and Linear Algebra 1 must be taken. If you start in the Winter semester, you must also choose Financial Accounting and Internal Business Accounting. If you start in the Summer semester, however, you will have to take the course Microeconomics instead.

In addition, we recommend that you attend the preliminary course in mathematics, which takes place before the actual semester. Alternatively or in addition, we recommend the course Methods of Mathematics, which starts in the first week of the semester.

Which subjects are to be taken in the following semesters?

The study progression model is a recommendation of what you should take in which semester. You can find it on the following website: here

We recommend the theory-in-practice course (OP) only in the 5th or 6th semester, i.e. rather at the end of your Bachelor's degree. OP is only offered in winter semester. We recommend the programming practical course in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th semester. In addition, a latex course could be very useful for your studies, especially when it comes to writing your Bachelor's \Master's thesis. You can normally have this course credited to your Individual Supplement.

You start in the Summer semester?

Both the WiMa Bachelor's and WiMa Master's programmes are actually designed to be started in the Winter semester. Of course, a start date in the Summer semester is also possible. However, there may be delays in courses and if you want to attend certain courses, such as the Bachelor's seminar on your favourite topic, your studies may be extended as a result. If you have any concerns or questions, you are welcome to contact our Student Counselling Service or the Academic Counselling Service. They can then work out a study plan with you with a start date in the summer semester.

What do the profiles in the Bachelor mean?

The profile decides whether you have to take the business administration or the basic economics courses. In addition, the profile determines whether the grades from the business administration or the basic economics courses are included in the overall grade.

For example, if you have chosen the VWL profile, you have to take VWL I and VWL II, and the grades of both modules are included in the overall grade. You must also take two of the three courses Accounting, Business Administration II and Data Analysis. However, the grades from these Modules do not count towards the overall grade.

If you have listened to both VWL I, VWL II, Accounting and BWL II, you can only decide on the profile when you apply for your certificate on the basis of the grades received.

What does "two different subfields of mathematics" mean in the elective area of mathematics?

Two different sub-areas means here that the two modules to be studied must differ in name. In the compulsory elective area, a 5 LP module and a 10 LP module must be studied. If, for example, you want to study algebra as a 10 LP module, you cannot also study algebra as a 5 LP module. You can, for example, take Geometry and Topology as a 5 LP module, although this module is related to Algebra in terms of content.

What can I do in the individual supplement?

The individual supplement comprises 10 credit points. You can include anything in the individual supplement that is offered at Bielefeld University - i.e. also courses from other degree programmes. However, these must be courses for the (respective) Bachelor's degree.

If you have already taken the preliminary course in mathematics or methods of mathematics, you can have one of them credited with 5 credit points in the individual supplement. Otherwise, the Probability Theory 1 course or an English language course may be useful for you as preparation for a Master's degree. Or a latex course can also be very useful for you, as mathematical theses are usually written in latex.

Where can I find information for the degree programme?

All information can be found here: https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fakultaeten/mathematik/fakultaet/fswima/studiengang-wirtschaftsma/

We also offer some information on our student council page. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us by email!

When and how do I register for the Bachelor's thesis?

You can write your Bachelor's thesis either in the field of economics or mathematics.

If you decide to write your Bachelor's thesis in the field of economics, you usually have to register for 3 Bachelor's colloquia and will be assigned one of them. The allocation usually takes place a few weeks after registration. You must register at the end of the lecture period. In the following semester, you will write your Bachelor's thesis and hand it in. You will automatically receive all further information on registration and the procedure each semester by email! So make sure you see this email in good time!

If you want to write a Bachelor's thesis in the field of mathematics, you usually have to register for a Bachelor's colloquium in the electronic course catalogue (ekvv). There you will also find all further information.

You want to do a Master's degree in WiMa after your Bachelor's degree?

If you want to do your Master's degree in Mathematical Economics with a profile in Financial Mathematics here at Bielefeld University, we recommend that you take the course Probability Theory I . This is best done at the end of your Bachelor's degree. It is best to do this at the end of your Bachelor's degree. In the Financial Mathematics profile, you usually start with the lecture Probability Theory II .
