Already in Bielefeld

After your arrival in Germany, you must attend to several formalities before you can start concentrating on your research and − hopefully − getting to know Bielefeld.

The following overview provides further information that should help to make it easier for you to find your way through all the "red tape" − something that is frequently not easy for Germans to do either!

  • Contact the Welcome Centre and meet us at Campus Start, our monthly event for new arrivals.
    For more details register ->here.
  • Register at the local residents' registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt)!

  • Get your German health insurance (Krankenversicherung)!

  • Open a current account at a bank!
    ->Read more
  • Register at the local foreigners' registration office (Ausländerbehörde) − and it is absolutely essential to do this in the first 3 months!
    ->Read more
  • If necessary, register your child for Kindergarten or school!

If you need assistance with the above mentioned formalities, please contact the Welcome Centre. We will be happy to advise and accompany you during your first days in Bielefeld!
