Join us in shaping the new Faculty of Medicine at Bielefeld University: interprofessional, forward-looking, diverse and strong in research and teaching

Current status of application procedure

  • Selection procedure by appointment committee

Bielefeld University stands for interdisciplinarity, top-quality research and teaching, and the ongoing development of a gender-equitable university culture. In 2019 the biggest academic institution in the East Westphalia-Lippe region will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Together and on an interdisciplinary basis a unique diversity of subjects, perspectives, and people provide for innovative research and teaching at the highest level. The students, numbering approximately 24,000, can choose from a broad range of disciplines in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and technology. In addition to its international orientation, Bielefeld University is closely networked with the strong SME sector in the city and surrounding region.

Bielefeld University is in the process of establishing a new, leading-edge faculty of human medicine. In an innovative environment we will work in an interdisciplinary manner, focusing on both individual and public health. Teaching and research in the Faculty of Medicine is scheduled to begin in the winter semester 2021/22. Clinical training will take place in cooperation with the specialist clinics of various hospitals belonging to the OWL University Hospital Alliance, which Bielefeld University is in the process of establishing.

As the holder of one of the first professorships, you will be fully involved in defining the distinctive profile of the model study programme and will have the opportunity to initiate innovative and sustainable teaching and research with a great deal of creative freedom. Experience in a model study programme in human medicine and the implementation of innovative teaching concepts as well as an additional medical teaching qualification (e.g. MME) are expressly desired.

In view of the ongoing selection process involving participating clinics, initial advertising will relate to professorships for theoretical medicine, as well as professorships in the field of outpatient medicine and medical didactics, digitalisation and interprofessionalism.

In particular we are looking for candidates who are willing to help develop the study programme, and to represent their own specialisation in cooperation with other relevant neighbouring disciplines. We would especially appreciate a pronounced willingness to cooperate with one of the main research areas currently planned
  • the brain, disabilities, inclusion of persons with disabilities
  • intelligent systems, assistance, interprofessional networking
and/ or in the currently planned future fields of study
  • microbial diversity in the human habitat
  • data science for healthcare.
An existing specialisation in these areas would be of advantage.

You will work closely with the founding dean, the dean’s office and the teaching staff from the various specialist disciplines. In addition, you will participate actively in the development of innovative fields of research within the main research areas or future fields, as well as in interdisciplinary and interprofessional research alliances.

Bielefeld University is looking for creative, ambitious, and bold academics for this exciting task.

Appointments will be made – appropriate to qualifications, experience and the personal requirements of the applicants – according to W3, W2 or W2 with tenure track.

The teaching load will comprise 9 hours of instruction in accordance with Section 3 Subsection 1 (1) of the Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung (Teaching Duties Regulation) from the start of the study programme. The requirements for appointment comply with section 36 of the Hochschulgesetz (Higher Education Act).

We wish to fill the following professorship at the earliest possible date:

THEORETICAL MEDICINE

Professorship of Physiology and Pathophysiology

For this professorship a willingness is required to participate in establishing the planned research focus of the Brain, Disability, Inclusion of persons with disabilities, and possibly also in the future field of Microbial Diversity in the Human Habitat. A competitive laboratory infrastructure will be provided. The university’s Central Animal Facility also enables biomedical research on small mammals in accordance with international standards. In addition, there are opportunities for cooperation with neighbouring faculties, e.g. in the use of analytical and high-resolution microscopic methods or with the Centre for Biotechnology in the use of genomic, post-genomic and bioinformatic methods.

As the successful candidate, you will help set up the relevant department. In this context, you will be responsible for the conception and implementation of innovative, practical teaching and the design of curricula, as well as the development of subject-specific research. In addition to working on medically relevant issues with links to university clinics, the ability and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary work in research networks as well as to use translational research approaches are required. We would particularly like you to set up and develop a collaboration with the university’s already established research groups.

The planned model study programme in Bielefeld will feature organ-based teaching which often dissolves traditional subject boundaries. To implement this innovative concept you will possess a maximum of flexibility, willingness to communicate and inventiveness, and will seek close developmental work with the university's existing faculties of biology, chemistry, health sciences and physics.

You have

  • an excellent academic profile in a field of basic research
