5th FlueGe Symposium on Refugee Health Research

International Conference Refugee Health: International dialogues - health policy recommendations based on scientific evidence

December 9, 2020

The ​conference will take place virtually in the context of the 5th FlueGe Symposium on December 9th and will focus on discussions on the health of refugees in current situations in various European and other regions of interest, including the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and South Asia - also in the light of the current Covid-19 pandemic. 

After speakers have had the opportunity to present the current situation in their respective countries, we will compare the challenges in various geographical contexts. Next, we will develop further and discuss strategies for science-based solutions to recommend for handling global refugee migration going forward.

The following speakers will present (subject to change):

  • Situation in Lesbos, Greece - Professor Ourania Tzoraki, School of Environment, University of the Aegean, Lesbos, Greece

  • Fragile and ambiguous conditions of refugees in Turkey - Professor İlke Şanlıer Yüksel, Migration and Development Research Center (migcu), Çukurova Üniversitesi, Adana, Turkey

  • Migrant and Refugee Health Issues in Europe: The important role of the Universities - Professor Luciano Saso, Vice-Rector for European University Networks, Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy

  • COVID-19 Pandemic: Threat to refugees and migrants - Professor Charles Agyemang, Global Migration, Ethnicity & Health, Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

  • Health status and healthcare utilization of Afghan Refugees in Pakistan - Professor Rubeena Zakar, Institute of Social and Cultural Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan
  • Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh: Challenges and strategies - Professor Mobarak Khan, Department of Social Relations, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, East West University, Dhaka, Bangladesh

  • Health of refugees and IDPs in the context of trans-country conflicts - Professor Samer Jabbour, Health Management & Policy, Faculty of Health Sciences, American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon

  • Refugee health as the building block for peace and sustainable development in Iran - Professor Amirhossein Takian, Department of Global Health & Public Policy, School of Public Health, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran

There will be a summarizing discussion at the end of the conference: Synthesis, perspectives and recommendations for refugee health with Professor Alexander Krämer, Dr Kerstin Schmidt (Bielefeld University), Dr Claudia Santos-Hövener, Robert Koch-Institute, Berlin, Germany & Professor Kayvan Bozorgmehr, Department of Population, Medicine and Health Services Research, School of Public, Health, Bielefeld University, Germany

ٖ5th FlueGe Symposium on Refugee Health Research: Interdisciplinary Reflections, Results and Perspectives

The Graduate School FlueGe will host an interdisciplinary conference, titled “Fifth FlueGe Symposium on Refugee Health Research: Interdisciplinary Reflections, Results, and Perspectives” on December 10th, 2020.

With the input of experts from various fields, the 5th symposium’s goal is to reflect on FlueGe research project outcomes and address transdisciplinary issues for the integration of FlueGe findings into healthcare policy and practice. Furthermore, we will be based on our own experience reflect on the challenges of science communication and the management of an inter/transdisciplinary research program. 

The conference will be held in German and English and addresses the following topics: 

  • “Multi-disciplinary approaches on refugees’ health, religion and culture; examples of Germany and Iran”
  • “Integration Geflüchteter in die Versorgungsstrukturen des deutschen Gesundheitssystems. Qualitative Analysen aus der Geburtshilfe und den Pflegeberufen”
  • “Soziale und volkswirtschaftliche Auswirkungen von Fluchtmigration in Deutschland”
  • “Aspekte psychologischer und mikrobiologischer Screeningmaßnahmen bei Menschen mit Fluchterfahrung”
  • “Gesundheitliche Vulnerabilität – rechtswissenschaftliche und philosophische Ergebnisse und Perspektiven”
