Doctoral Project: Antisemitism in the World Society: Globalization and the Transformation of Jew Hatred

Research on antisemitism is increasingly concerned with the relationship between the hostility towards Jews and globalization. Many scholars assume that, under the impact of globalization, antisemitism is rapidly changing. While some argue that antisemitism is becoming more diverse and complex due to its worldwide dissemination, others even observe that Jew hatred is emerging as a new phenomenon which integrates old features of modern antisemitism, but also new ones deriving from the process of globalization. However, long-term international comparisons are scarce, and theories of globalization are often not well elaborated.
The PhD project contributes to the debate on global antisemitism by comparing antisemitic discourses in Argentina, Egypt, Germany, Japan and the USA from late 19th to the 21st century, based on an extensive integrative synthesis of already existing research. The results of this analysis will then be discussed in the light of a conceptual combination of theories of antisemitism and theories of world society. In that regard, antisemitism is understood and will be analyzed as a specific mode of observing the world that has emerged and developed in relation to global structures, norms and expectations.
