Welcome to the ISSC

Are you an international degree-​seeking student with questions about financing your studies, about finding part-​time jobs or about the extension of your residence permit? Do you need information about scholarships, finding accommodations or the registration for courses and exams during your studies? Do you want to meet other students and attend exciting events and trips?

The International Student Services Centre (ISSC) is your first stop. We are here to advise you in all questions concerning studying and living in Bielefeld and support you in overcoming the challenges that come with studying in a foreign country. Your academic success is important to us.

Applications for the Graduation Scholarship for international students for the summer semester 2022 will be open from the beginning of December 2021. This year, the application process will be digital for the first time. You will find more information on our website soon.

The DAAD Award for international students will be awarded on Graduates' Day on 3rd December 2021. This year's award winner is Matteo Tasso from the LiLi faculty.

Our Services

Are you an international (degree-seeking) student who is starting their studies at Bielefeld University in summer term 2021? Then get in touch with us! We offer a Welcome Event for international students on 28 to 30 September 2021 (presence) as well as to the digital orientation days on 01.10.or on 19.11.2021 (alternative dates). to give you important information for a successful start at Bielefeld University. During this period we will hold several meetings in small groups lasting 90 minutes each in order to help you create your timetable and find important contact points for your studies.   

Due to the corona virus, we currently only offer face-to-face meetings and personal consultation hours in small groups and under strict hygiene rules. You can participate in the welcome event virtually or in person.

If you would like to participate in the Welcome Event, please contact us via e-mail at and answer the following questions:  

  1. Do you attend the event in presence or digitally?
  2. Would you like to attend the event in German or English?
  3. In which degree program will you be studying?
  4. In case of presence: from which country are you traveling and when is your arrival?

Please understand that we only offer limited advice by email during our orientation days.


Please note the quarantine regulations valid in Germany. If you have to go into quarantine, please inform us so we can support you in this situation. In addition, we offer a virtual Welcome Desk, which takes place between 02.04 and 07.05.2021, Mon. - Fri. from 12.00 noon until 1 p.m. via Zoom.. To participate, please write an e-mail to or call us at +49 521 106 - 4078 and you will receive an invitation to the Zoom conference.

Due to the current situation we the IMP-Team are not able to offer intercultural trainings or social events. Anyway you can still sign up as a mentor or mentee. You will be provided with further information via mail after your registraition.

An important part of orientation is provided by the International Mentoring Programm (IMP). International Students can register for a mentor, who will provide them with immediate support upon their arrival in Bielefeld and during the first semester, giving them a trained contact partner for questions related to studies, the university, student life and the city as well as support with administrative processes, etc. Mentees have the possibility to attend an intercultural competencies workshop as well as the various social events organized throughout semester.

Are you a student with a refugee background and do you need advice on residence and BAföG?

The Refugee Counseling Team will advise you.

The ISSC advises International students in the areas of financing and grant possibilities, residency issues and other administrative processes, Orientation during studies, job searches and general daily matters at the university and in the city. As the main point of contact for international degree-seeking students, the ISSC is well networked with other central advisory and service organisations at the university as well as with several associations outside of the university and uses these networks actively when advising international students.

The ISSC awards administrates a diverse line of grants and prizes for international students

Students who are in the last phase of their studies can apply for a Graduation Scholarship. The grants are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with the purpose of easing financial strains on students in order that they can prepare successfully for their final exams.

Applications for a Graduation Scholarship in the summer semester 2022 are possible from the beginning of December 2021 until 15 January 2022. Further information will follow soon.


The ISSC also administrates numerous prizes for international students with excellent academic records and social engagement such as the annual DAAD-Prize, which is endowed with 1,000 €.

The Universitätsgesellschaft Bielefeld (UGBi) awards grants to new international master students who are studying in an English language degree track in the 1st or 2nd semester and have excellent academic achievements. The UGBi-Grants are endowed with 4,000 € and are announced each spring. Call for applications is available during the application period here at Start of Studies.

International students caught in a financial emergency which they themselves have not caused have the possibility of applying with the ISSC for an emergency financial aid in order that their academic success does not become jeopardized.

We offer events for international students during the semester in which we provide helpful information on studying and living in Bielefeld. The program for the winter semester 2021/22 can be found here.

In times of "social distancing", contact with other people (even if only via Skype or telephone) is very important. Therefore we continue to offer a leisure program, which now takes place partly online and partly in presence.

Every semester, the ISSC organizes a recreational program for international degree-seeking and ERASMUS students with funding from the DAAD STIBET program and a donation from the Verein zur Förderung von internationalen Studierenden in Bielefeld (ViSiB). With local and regional excursions, museum visits, guided tours, hikes and other outdoor activities, we would like to make it easier for you to arrive in Bielefeld and support you in finding social connection.
