A variety of interdisciplinary research institutions such as the cluster of excellence "Cognitive Interaction Technology" (CITEC) as well as the "Center for Biotechnology" (CeBiTec) are involved in both research and teaching.
The "Bielefeld Institute for Bioinformatics Infrastructure" (BIBI) is an interdisciplinary academic department under the responsibility of the Faculty of Technology at Bielefeld University. The institute covers research and service aspects to handle big data in the life sciences. It is related to the BMBF funded "German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure" (de.NBI), which has been establishing a national bioinformatics infrastructure since 2015. The coordination and administration office of de.NBI is based in the Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) of Bielefeld University. A structural objective of BIBI in cooperation with the Cologne Information Centre for Life Sciences (ZB MED) is a permanent continuation of the de.NBI network.
The Center for Biotechnology – CeBiTec – is one of the largest and most prominent central academic institutions at Bielefeld University. The CeBiTec bundles activities and interests of research groups focusing on various aspects of biotechnology within the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry, and Technology. Everything from everyday appliances to robots: researchers at the Cluster of Excellence Center in Cognitive Interactive Technology (CITEC) at Bielefeld University develop technical systems that are intuitive and easy to operate for human users. Future technology should adapt to the human user - not the other way around.
Since 2007, researchers have been investigating the scientific principles necessary for endowing machines with cognitive abilities. These machines should be able to interact naturally with people and adjust to changing situations. Researching the scientific foundations of cognitive interaction technology, a research area founded by CITEC, is the necessary pioneering work.
Interdisciplinary research activities at CITEC are organized into four main areas: motor intelligence, attentive systems, situated communication, and memory and learning. What are the basic building blocks of cognition and learning? How can we endow robots with some social competence, to make them acceptable as assistants to humans? How can machines communicate smoothly and on semantic levels with humans? Such important yet unsolved and persistent research questions have been guiding Bielefeld researchers in the key area of Interactive Intelligent Systems for many years.
The Research Centre for Mathematical Modelling (RCM2) is an inter-departmental institution of Bielefeld University which provides a common platform for applications of mathematics to the sciences. The activities include both research and training in mathematical modelling and in mathematical solution techniques.
Within the centre, a large number of interdisciplinary cooperations have been established that have led to joint publications, organisation of workshops across disciplines, and to jointly guided PhD Projects.
The current main focus of the centre is on research projects in Theoretical Biosciences, Mathematical Materials Science and Dynamics of Financial Markets.
