The Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology is seeking to fill the position of a

W2-Professorship with Tenure Track or W3-Professorship for the History of Modern Societies

starting as soon as possible.

We are looking for a candidate (f/m) with a national and international reputation and with a research focus on the history of modern societies (19th/20th century). Requirements for recruitment are own research projects and teaching experience in the area of European history in its global references. An additional focus on a non-European world region is an advantage. We expect an active commitment to the CRC 1288 “Practices of Comparing” (SFB) and a readiness to participate in other existing or planned collaborative projects within or outside our faculty. The Bielefeld Department of History sees itself as a place of historical research that is both theory-based and interdisciplinary in its approach. Accordingly, the future post holder (f/m) should be open to cultural and socio-historical, praxeological as well as sociological approaches. S/he should foster and expand the cooperation with the Bielefeld Faculty of Sociology, e.g. in the context of the the Bielefeld Graduate School of History and Sociology. Furthermore, we expect an active involvement in the structural and profile-building reform processes of the faculty.

Requirements for recruitment are a university degree, pedagogical aptitude, a qualified doctoral thesis in history or a related field, as well as additional scientific achievements which will be evaluated comprehensively and exclusively during the appointment procedure (§ 36 HG) [German Higher Education Act). In the case of an appointment as a W2-Professorship, recruitment is initially limited to five years; following appointment, a target agreement will be formulated. In case of a positive evaluation in the final year, the appointment will be transferred to an indefinite W3-Professorship. The tenure evaluation procedures are regulated in the statutes concerning the implementation of W2-Professorships with Tenure Track. W2-Tenure-Track-Professorships are firmly established at Bielefeld University as an appointment option. Tenure-Track-Professors (f/m) are offered a target group specific personnel development programme that provides support during the arrival phase and the preparation of the tenure evaluation.

Applications from suitably qualified handicapped and severely handicapped persons are explicitly encouraged.

The faculty considers gender equality as an important task and expects the future post holder to contribute to its continued implementation. Bielefeld University has received a number of awards for its achievements in the provision of equal opportunities and has been recognised as a family-friendly university. The university welcomes applications from women. This is particularly true with regard to academic and technical posts as well as positions in information technology and craft. Applications are handled in accordance with the provisions of the state’s equal opportunity statutes.

Bielefeld University promotes Dual-Career couples and supports them with a range of services to help them create a joint place to work and live.

Applications should include the usual documents (CV, list of publications identifying ten most important publications, five-page teaching and research concept, list of courses taught, copies of academic degrees).

Please submit your application online via the University of Bielefeld’s vocation portal by July 15, 2022
