The Alberta-OWL consortium consists of four universities from OWL (Ostwestfalen-Lippe, a region in Germany) and four higher-education institutions from Edmonton (Canada). All institutions work together to exchange and develop knowledge. The partnership focuses on close interdisciplinary collaboration in research, as well as the exchange of students and interns. This bilateral relationship between all participating partners serves to complement, combine and expand the strengths of both regions.

Bielefeld University and the Universidad de Guadalajara have been collaborating intensively since 2005 in the form of student exchanges, but also exchanges of teachers and scientists, which are supported through the International Study Partnership Program (ISAP). In the field of research, both partners have a coordinating role in a German-Latin American research center, the Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS), which was established in 2017. It conducts research in the humanities and social sciences and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
