New data lab for sustainability and climate change launched

A new data lab "Bi DataLab Sustainability and Climate Change" has been founded at Bielefeld University at the Bielefeld Centre for Data Science. Data labs represent an agile approach to (internal) research collaboration, characterised by a thematic focus and a clear needs-driven orientation. The newly founded DataLab Sustainability and Climate Change at BiCDaS invites researchers at Bielefeld University working on sustainability, climate change and environmental protection to the Sustainability Networking Workshop on 7 June from 9 am to 5 pm. BiCDaS Lecture Series: "Digital Literacy mit ChatGPT: Kompetenzen zum Umgang mit digitalen Texten"

On 17 June 2024, Prof. Dr. Andreas Witt from the Leibniz Institute for the German Language Mannheim will give a lecture on "Digital Literacy mit ChatGPT: Kompetenzen zum Umgang mit digitalen Texten". The lecture will take place from 12:15 to 13:45 in the Cafe Nordlicht at Bielefeld University on site but also as a hybrid event online via Zoom. The lecture emphasises digital literacy in the humanities, with a focus on research data and the role of ChatGPT in the development of digital literacy. It begins with a conceptual introduction to digital literacy, highlighting the importance of digital texts in science, and covers their representation, analysis and processing, highlighting Python and spaCy as key tools.

The Bielefeld Center for Data Science (BiCDaS) was founded in 2017 by the members of the round table on data science. It is a horizontal institution traversing all faculties and disciplines. Its mission is to unlock the potentials data has in an academic context and it aspires to an integrative role throughout Bielefeld University.

BiCDaS counts on its members, people coming from all faculties and various institutions; their willingness to exchange experiences, knowledge, and challenges across disciplines makes them BiCDaS’s most valuable asset. They meet regularly to discuss and initiate strategic measures and the BiCDaS director implements these decisions and promotes further strategic development. He is also first point of contact should you have questions about BiCDaS.

Data science is a trending topic. As BiCDaS's awareness level rises, we are more and more frequently approached by external partners, i.e. from economy and industry, for public/private partnerships. We are happy to bring BiCDaS's researchers into contact with these firms, hoping for exciting opportunities to arise.
