Excursions
Depending on the number of interested participants we would be happy to offer day-long excursions to a local wetland, with the potential of containing nice assemblages of birds.
At the heart of industrialized Europe, substantial areas with high-nature value are few and far between, so both options include approx. 1 h of travel.
In case of insufficient interest excursion groups may be united.
Destinations on offer
- Dümmer/Ochsenmoor/Diepholzer Moor
Dümmer
The Dümmer is protected area of lakes and moors, some 100 km away from Bielefeld. It is famous for its opportunities for close-up fotography of marsh birds (possibly the last remaining ones in the region.)
The nature of our group excursion and the time of year suggest a day of relaxed birding, even at the expence of phtographic opportunities.

Rieselfelder Münster
© Thomas Kepp The Rieselfelder is a wetland area within the borders of Münster, remnant of an industrial waste water disposal area but restored since 1975. Nowadays, it is one of top biodiveristy-spots in the province of North-Rhine Westphalia and offers a nice route for a half-day of birdwatching.

© Bielefeld Marketing Bielefeld is positioned in the NE parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous, densely populated and industrial state of Germany.
Bielefeld itself has for a long time been an industrial hub. Since the 17th century is has developed as a centre of linen production and trade. In the 20th century it became additionally an important centre of machine and food industries and of psychiatric healthcare. During World War II major parts of the city, including the old town have been destroyed. The Sparrenberg Castle is the landmark of the city and a restored fortress from the 13th century with a catacomb network which is still not fully described.
The local organisers are still exploring the most entertaining options for a half-day histroical tour around Bielefeld or in neighbouring towns.
