Academic Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is responsible for ZiF's scientific programme. Its tasks are, among others, the development of interdisciplinary research, e.g. the decisions on interdisciplinary undertakings and projects at ZiF.
The Board of Directors consists of
- four professors of Bielefeld University who are appointed for four years by the Rectorate of the university on the recommendation of the Advisory Board of ZiF (one reappointment is permissible),
- one Prorector appointed by the Rector,
- one representative each from the group of academic staff and the group of staff in technology and administration, who are elected from their status groups within ZiF for four years (re-election is permissible),
- and ZiF's Managing Director as well as the Head of Bielefeld University’s Department for Research Administration and Technology Transfer (FFT) with advisory roles.
The Board of Directors elects one or two professorial members from their midst as Executive Director(s) and Deputy Executive Director, respectively, for a term of two years (re-election is permissible)..

Academic Advisory Board
- The Advisory Board consists of 16 members (from Bielefeld University and scholars from other universities).
- The members are nominated by the faculties and appointed by the Rectorate of Bielefeld University for four-year terms (re-appointment is possible).
- The Advisory Board elects a chairperson and their deputy from the group of the non-Bielefeld scholars.

All artists are only nominated by the Committee; ZiF does not encourage self-initiative applications.
