Bielefeld University stands for interdisciplinarity, high quality research and teaching, and the further development of a gender-equitable university culture. People from a wide variety of subjects and perspectives work together to promote innovative and interdisciplinary research and teaching at the highest level. A broad range of study opportunities in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, technical sciences and medicine is open to the approximately 25,000 students. In addition to its international orientation, Bielefeld University is well connected to the medium-sized city and the region.

The Faculty of Technology is calling for applications for the position of

Professorship (W3) for Digital Services in the Life Sciences

to commence at the earliest opportunity.

The successful candidate will be granted leave of absence after appointment as a university professor to head the Bielefeld Institute for Bioinformatics Infrastructure as a sub-division of ZB MED at the Bielefeld campus (so-called Jülich model). ZB MED is the central national service centre for specialist information and research support in the life sciences. Its focus is on the subjects of medicine, health care, nutrition, environmental and agricultural sciences.

The post holder represents the area of digital services for the life sciences in research and teaching. She or he cooperates with the bioinformatics working groups of the Faculty of Technology. One of the focal points of the Faculty of Technology is bioinformatics, from algorithms and software development to service and training activities, especially in support of knowledge gain in microbial genome research in biotechnology and medicine. The majority of the latter take place within the framework of the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI) and other third-party funded projects, e.g. within the framework of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI).

We are looking for a person with special experience in dealing with scientific issues that arise when offering informatics services in the life sciences. This includes both practical experience such as the operation of large compute infrastructures or the integration and processing of large amounts of data, for example in the context of relevant large-scale projects; as well as experience on a conceptual level, for example the development of methods for the automated support of scientific work. The applicant should have excellent scientific credentials in at least one of the above-mentioned areas.

It is expected that the existing focus areas of ZB MED (intelligent information processing, research data management) and of the Faculty of Technology (bioinformatics, intelligent systems) will be meaningfully complemented by the planned research projects. Commitment to establishing a knowledge environment for the life sciences in cooperation with the other working groups of ZB MED is expected, in particular the implementation of a national solution for supplying the life sciences with bioinformatics services.

In accordance with the "Jülich Model", a teaching obligation of 2 SWS is associated with the leave of absence to ZB MED. The acquisition of third-party funding and the management of larger projects are expected, as is the assumption of institutional management functions in the event that ZB MED / BIBI is admitted to the Leibniz Association.

According to §36 HG NRW, the requirements for appointment are a completed university degree and a doctorate in a relevant field (preferably computer science), additional academic achievements, which are evaluated exclusively and comprehensively in the appointment procedure, as well as relevant teaching achievements and didactical suitability.

Applications from suitable severely disabled persons and persons with disabilities of equal status are expressly encouraged.
