The Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology at Bielefeld University is seeking to fill the positions of two professorships:

1. Professorship for Systematic Theology (W3 or W1/W2 with Tenure Track W3)

2. Professorship for Diaconia and Social Economy Management (focus on Business Studies) (W3 or W1/W2 with Tenure Track W3)

The Professorship for Systematic Theology is based at the Department of Theology, the Professorship for Diaconia and Social Economy Management at the Institute for Diaconal Science and Diaconal Management (IDWM) of the Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology.

The IDWM, supported by the Protestant Church of Westphalia (EKvW) and the von Bodelschwinghschen Stiftungen Bethel (vBSB), has only recently become an academic department of Bielefeld University. The integration of the IDWM into the faculty was preceded by a fruitful strategic process of clarification that mapped out a common development perspective for the Department of Theology and the IDWM. This perspective bears the heading "Religion in Socio-Cultural Transformation".

Both professorships will have an important role in the implementation of this development perspective. They offer the opportunity to shape the integration and the reorientation of the two faculty sections related thereto in a field with many options to connect to interdisciplinary research contexts.

With regard to the Professorship for Systematic Theology we are looking for a personality (m/f/d) who represents the field Systematic Theology in research and teaching. Particularly welcome are additional competences in the areas of social sciences/empiric religious research and ethic.

In addition, we expect an interdisciplinary-oriented teaching and research profile that takes e.g. empirical, hermeneutical and historical questions, methods and theory developments into account as well as an active involvement in the planning of degree programmes. Experiences in acquiring third-party funding and a readiness to participate in collaborative projects both within the department and the faculty are an advantage.

The Department of Theology comprises the fields of Biblical Theology, Systematic Theology, Church History, Religious Science as well as Religious Pedagogy and combines its research work, that is characterised by a combination of normative and descriptive approaches, in the field of religion and society.

Students at the Department of Theology are currently studying the subject Protestant Theology for primary education and for a teaching profession at secondary and comprehensive schools (German: Haupt-, Real-, Sekundar- und Gesamtschule) (both degree programmes offer the option “inclusive education”).  An additional master programme for social-scientific and transdisciplinary religious research is planned.

With regard to the Professorship for Diaconia and Social Economy Management (focus on Business Studies) we are looking for a personality (m/f/d) with a special interest in the business practice of social economy who will represent the field of business studies, in particular (diaconal) management, with an interdisciplinary focus and a reflection of senior diaconal and church management activities in research and teaching.

Together with two theological professorships, the professorship forms an integral part of the IDWM, that conducts and develops diaconal science and diaconal management with an interdisciplinary and multi-rational orientation.

We expect an interdisciplinary-oriented teaching and research profile, an aptitude for interactive and student-centered teaching as well as participation in the cooperative organisational structures of the IDWM. In addition, we expect a readiness to cooperate scientifically within the faculty and to use the wide opportunities for interdisciplinary networking offered within Bielefeld University as well as an active involvement in national and international collaborative projects. The future post holder should be open to connect to research foci existing at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics at Bielefeld University, in particular to the Institute for Family Businesses (iFUn) or in the field of Human Resource Management.

Competences in the field of social sciences and/or empirical social research, or business ethics and/or corporate ethics, as well as relevant practical experience, church membership and intercultural openness are an advantage.

In its extra-occupational postgraduate courses (MA and PhDs, in German and English language/ international with a focus on Southeast Asia and Africa), IDWM is dedicated to an interdisciplinary qualification of senior management staff working in diaconia, the church and social economy. Research and teaching take place in cooperation with lecturers from business practice and other disciplines relevant for diaconal science. We expect an active participation in all these areas.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We would like to offer the two professorships to personalities who will actively participate in the contentual reorientation of the Department of Theology and the IDWM and who will shape the integration process in research and teaching related thereto in a creative and ambitious manner. In addition, participation in the academic self-administration is a requirement of the job profile.

Pursuant to § 36 HG [German Higher Education Act], requirements for recruitment are a university degree, pedagogical aptitude, a qualified doctoral thesis (with regard to the Professorship for Systematic Theology in a subject related to protestant theology, preferably systematic theology, or a related discipline) and, in case of an appointment as a W2-Professorship with Tenure Track or an indefinite W3-Professorship, additional scientific achievements which will be evaluated comprehensively and exclusively during the appointment procedure (§ 36 section 1 number 4 HG NRW).

In case of an appointment as a W1-Professorship, recruitment is initially limited to three years with an option of extension for a further three years following a positive interim evaluation. In case of a positive tenure evaluation in the final year, the appointment will be transferred to an indefinite W3-Professorship. The W2 position is limited to five years; following appointment, a target agreement will be formulated. In case of a positive evaluation in the final year, the appointment will be transferred to an indefinite W3-Professorship. The interim/tenure evaluation procedures are regulated in the statutes concerning the implementation of W1-Professorships with Tenure Track/W2-Professorships with Tenure Track.

Tenure-Track-Professorships are firmly established at Bielefeld University as equal appointment options. Tenure-Track-Professors (f/m) are offered a target group specific personnel development programme that provides support during the arrival phase and the preparation of the interim and tenure evaluation.

Applications from severely disabled persons and persons of equal status are explicitly encouraged.

The faculty considers gender equality as an important task and expects the future post holder to contribute to its implementation. Bielefeld University has received a number of awards for its achievements in the provision of equal opportunities and has been recognised as a family-friendly university. The university welcomes applications from women. This is particularly true with regard to academic and technical posts as well as positions in information technology and craft. Applications are handled in accordance with the provisions of the state’s equal opportunity statutes.

Please submit your application including the usual documents (CV, certificates, list of publications identifying up to ten most important publications, two-page teaching and research concept, list of courses taught and acquired third-party funding) online via the vocation portal of Bielefeld University by January 31, 2023
