The Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies of Bielefeld University seeks to fill three professorships in Latin Literary Studies, General and Comparative Literature, and German Literature as of October 1, 2024.

Literary Studies at Bielefeld University includes English and American Studies, German Studies, Latin Studies, Romance Studies, and General and Comparative Literature. With shared broader theoretical and methodological interests, the respective disciplines have come together to form a differentiated association of literary studies disciplines that deals with European and non-European literatures from Antiquity through the medieval and early modern periods to the present in their manifold interactions and connections. Thematic and methodological foci––such as research on literature for children and young adults, the investigation into European Jewish literatures or the reflection on quantitative and qualitative methods as well as postcolonial and gender studies––contribute to the profile just as much as an interest in the global context––the Americas or West Africa. The historically and systematically differentiated literary studies disciplines at Bielefeld University integrate perspectives from the history of culture, media, society, and knowledge.

To strengthen our team, we welcome applications from candidates who are highly committed to both teaching and research to fill the following position:

Professor of General and Comparative Literature (W3)

We seek a nationally and internationally recognized scholar. The holder of this position is expected to teach and conduct research in General and Comparative Literature. Applicants are expected to have a historical and systematic focus on European literature, including German literature (18th to 21st centuries), as well as a proven research interest in theoretical and methodological aspects of Comparative Literature. Experience in obtaining external funding and in interdisciplinary collaborative research is desired.

In teaching, participation in the specialized Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Literary Studies, especially the new Bachelor’s degree program in Literary Studies, is expected. Relevant experience in university teaching must be shown.

Bielefeld University attaches high importance to interdisciplinary collaboration within the faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies and to cross-faculty cooperation. Therefore, it is expected that the future holder of the position will expand the cooperation with other philological disciplines and will be involved in the development of joint projects.
