The Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies of Bielefeld University seeks to fill three professorships in Latin Literary Studies, General and Comparative Literature, and German Literature as of October 1, 2024.

Literary Studies at Bielefeld University includes English and American Studies, German Studies, Latin Studies, Romance Studies, and General and Comparative Literature. With shared broader theoretical and methodological interests, the respective disciplines have come together to form a differentiated association of literary studies disciplines that deals with European and non-European literatures from Antiquity through the medieval and early modern periods to the present in their manifold interactions and connections. Thematic and methodological foci––such as research on literature for children and young adults, the investigation into European Jewish literatures or the reflection on quantitative and qualitative methods as well as postcolonial and gender studies––contribute to the profile just as much as an interest in the global context––the Americas or West Africa. The historically and systematically differentiated literary studies disciplines at Bielefeld University integrate perspectives from the history of culture, media, society, and knowledge.

To strengthen our team, we welcome applications from candidates who are highly committed to both teaching and research to fill the following position:

Professor of German Literature (W3)

The future holder of the position covers the field of Modern German Literature in its entire breadth; special consideration is given to questions of literary theory and the German literature of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The focus of research and teaching is on questions of literary history as well as literary theory; this research should be compatible with other philological disciplines (through reflection on the foundations of aesthetics in literature or on German-language literature in a European or global context, or similar). In this respect, we expect clearly outlined research foci in literary theory as well as in German literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. Relevant experience in university teaching is required. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and interdisciplinary collaborative research is desired.

The future holder of this position will be involved in teaching in all Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in German Studies. In addition, the candidate is expected to participate in examinations, in academic self-administration, and to be willing to cooperate in teaching and research with other areas of German Studies, with General and Comparative Literature and the Department of Literary Studies. This includes active participation in the preparation, solicitation, and implementation of faculty collaborative projects that bring together the diversity of literary studies in Bielefeld.

According to § 36 HG NRW, the prerequisites for employment are your completed university degree in literary studies, exceptional performance in academic work, as demonstrated by the superior quality of your doctoral thesis, suitable pedagogical skills, as shown in your previous education or as well as additional postdoctoral research achievements, which will be evaluated exclusively and comprehensively in the appointment procedure.

Applications from suitable severely impaired and equally disabled persons are explicitly welcome.

The faculty regards the equality of women and men as important and its implementation as part of the future holder’s responsibilities.

Bielefeld University has received several rewards for its success in gender equality and is certified as a family-friendly university. Bielefeld University welcomes applications from women. This is particularly true in the academic field. It handles applications in accordance with the State Equal Opportunities Act. Family times will be considered in the context of the selection decision.

Bielefeld University supports dual-career constellations to establish a common centre of life and work.

Applications should consist of: a cover letter, your resumé/curriculum vitae outlining your academic career, a 3-page presentation of your research and teaching concepts, that is aligned with the profile of the position in Bielefeld, a list of publications identifying up to 10 of the most important publications relating to the position advertised, a list of your research activities and, if applicable, third-party funding you have initiated, a list of the courses you have taught and other evidence of your teaching qualifications. Please refrain from submitting writings for the time being.
