The Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies of Bielefeld University seeks to fill

three professorships in Latin Literary Studies, General and Comparative Literature, and German Literature

as of October 1, 2024.

Literary Studies at Bielefeld University includes English and American Studies, German Studies, Latin Studies, Romance Studies, and General and Comparative Literature. With shared broader theoretical and methodological interests, the respective disciplines have come together to form a differentiated association of literary studies disciplines that deals with European and non-European literatures from Antiquity through the medieval and early modern periods to the present in their manifold interactions and connections. Thematic and methodological foci––such as research on literature for children and young adults, the investigation into European Jewish literatures or the reflection on quantitative and qualitative methods as well as postcolonial and gender studies––contribute to the profile just as much as an interest in the global context––the Americas or West Africa. The historically and systematically differentiated literary studies disciplines at Bielefeld University integrate perspectives from the history of culture, media, society, and knowledge.

To strengthen our team, we welcome applications from candidates who are highly committed to both teaching and research to fill the following positions:

(1) Professor for Latin Literary Studies (W2 TT W3 or W3)

We seek a nationally and internationally recognized scholar, who represents the entire breadth of Latin in research and teaching. The candidate is expected to have a distinct focus on classical Latin literature as well as on post-classical Latin literatures.

The focus of research and teaching is in the areas of literary and cultural studies, which are dealt with in a way that is compatible with other philological disciplines. For example, aspects of poetics and aesthetics, knowledge and literature or translation and transformation processes are to be taken into account in greater depth.

In teaching, participation in both the main BA and MA programs and the teaching-track BA and MA programs of Latin Studies and Literary Studies as well as in the MA programs in “Kulturvermittlung” and Interdisciplinary Media Studies co-supported by Bielefeld Latin Studies, is expected. Experience in the successful acquisition of external funding and already existing international networks are desired.

Bielefeld University attaches high importance to interdisciplinary collaboration within the faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies and to cross-faculty cooperation. Therefore, it is expected that the future holder of the position will expand interdisciplinary cooperation within the faculty as well as with other philological disciplines and will be involved in the development of collaborative projects.

According to § 36 HG NRW, the requirements for appointment are your completed university degree in literary studies, exceptional aptitude for academic work, as demonstrated by the superior quality of your doctoral thesis, suitable pedagogical skills, as shown in your previous education as well as additional postdoctoral research achievements, which will be evaluated exclusively and comprehensively in the appointment procedure.

In the case of appointment as a W2 professorship, the appointment is initially limited to five years; following appointment, a target agreement will be formulated. In case of a positive evaluation in the final year, the appointment will be transferred to a permanent W3 professorship. The tenure evaluation procedures are regulated in the statutes concerning the implementation of W2 professorships with tenure track. W2 tenure-track professorships are firmly established at Bielefeld University as an equal appointment option. Tenure-track-professors are offered a target group-specific personnel development programme that provides support during the arrival phase and in preparation of the tenure evaluation.
