The Medical School OWL at Bielefeld University intends to fill at the Campus Bielefeld Bethel (CBB) a

Professorship for Hematology and Oncology (W2 TT W3)

at the earliest possible date. This is associated with the position of Head Senior Physician at the Department for Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation, and Palliative Medicine at EvKB. In the event of a positive evaluation as part of the tenure-track procedure, there will be a regulated succession as Director of the University Department.

At Bielefeld University, an innovative Medical School with an interdisciplinary individual and population medicine orientation and the University Medical Center OWL (UMC OWL), with the Klinikum Bielefeld, Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB), and Klinikum Lippe as holders, are established. We are looking for personalities who want to seize the development situation and its challenges as a chance and actively participate in research, teaching, patient care, and organization. We offer an exciting environment that opens up a wide range of opportunities. You will be significantly involved in the further planning and implementation of the model study program in human medicine (according to ÄApprO), as well as in implementing the "clinician" and "advanced clinician scientist" programs, and you will have the opportunity to apply innovative concepts in teaching. At the same time, you will take on a significant role in developing an interconnected, inter/nationally competitive research profile "Medicine for people with disabilities and chronic diseases".

The expertise of the three supporting hospitals of the University Medical Center OWL (UMC OWL) is to be bundled under the umbrella of a "University Cancer Center UMC OWL" to be developed, thus creating a university network with 4.000 newly diagnosed oncological diseases and 12.000 oncological patients per year. The bundling and coordination of oncological studies, the establishment of cross-location tumor conferences and the establishment of a joint stem cell transplant center for allogeneic stem cell therapy in its own legal form will form the framework for personalized medicine and healthcare research at the UMC OWL in the future. The future University Cancer Center for the UMC OWL will have a joint steering committee, which will ensure the equal involvement of the three hematology-oncology clinics in research, teaching and care in tumor medicine and promote the university medical development within the field. A further professorship for Hematology and Oncology (W3) has already been advertised at the Campus Klinikum Bielefeld Campus and Campus Klinikum Lippe.

The call aims at personalities in an early career stage, with an already promising profile within hematology and oncology, and who can represent the field of expertise in research, teaching, and patient care in its entirety.

The prerequisites are:

  • specialist qualification for internal medicine with a focus on hematology and oncology
  • relevant doctorate, and additionally scientific achievements according to § 36 paras. 1; no. 4 HG NRW
  • promisingly scientific achievements reflected in corresponding publications and third-party funding
  • broad clinical experience and clinical leadership experience
  • connectivity to the research profile of the Medical School OWL
  • extensive teaching experience and experience with innovative teaching formats in the subject to be represented
  • experience and active involvement in the equality-oriented promotion of young scientists

The Oncology Centre at Campus Bielefeld Bethel (CBB), certified by the German Cancer Society, treats every year 2.500 inpatients with oncological diseases of various entities. In addition to hematology, there are currently oncological focuses in the areas of visceral, neurological, urological, pneumological, and pediatric oncology. Clinical ethics has been established at the location. There is a long-standing multidisciplinary and cross-faculty research cooperation (FBMB e. V.) for basic research and stem cell research. About this, the membership in the Stem Cell Network NRW is given.

As position holder, you will further develop translational, personalized stem cell and immunotherapy in clinical care and research and play a leading role in shaping the Oncology Centre at the CBB. The certified "Centre for Personalized Oncology" at the CBB should be assigned to the professorship and establish the framework for a precision medicine therapy approach. The site's established blood bank and a stem cell apheresis unit, also approved as a pharmaceutical manufacturer, are available for this purpose in cooperation with the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW (HDZ NRW) and the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH), which is assigned to the Department of Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation, and Palliative Medicine. There is also a laboratory area with extensive immunohematological diagnostics, the stem cell therapy area, and clinical hemostaseology with platelet function diagnostics.
In close cooperation with the Department for People with Neurodevelopmental Disorders at the CBB, the establishment of the focus of research "Oncology in Disability Medicine" is also desired.

We expect networking with other departments of the UMC OWL, other faculties of Bielefeld University, and the medical community in private practice in the region as well as a high willingness to address gender- and diversity-related issues for the improvement of the care practice. Accordingly, we are looking for a personality with leadership experience and expertise in the entire field and excellent communication and coordination skills.

For the appeals applies:

A private-law employment contract with the University is envisaged for the performance of the duties of the professorship. The requirements for employment follow § 36 HG. The tasks within patient care will be regulated via a contract with the EvKB.

The W2 tenure variant is initially limited to five years but designed with a tenure-track option after W3. The removal of the time limit follows within a positive evaluation based on a target agreement. Applicants for the W2 tenure-track position must have already developed promising research profiles during their postdoc phase.
The tenure evaluations are regulated in the statutes on quality assurance for professorships with tenure Track (TT). Tenure-track professorships are firmly established at Bielefeld University as an equal tenure option. Tenure-track professors are offered a target-group- specific personnel development programme that provides support during the arrival phase and in preparation for the tenure evaluation.
