What We Do:
- Speech synthesis, i.e. the artificial production of speech such as that used in robots, reading devices for blind people, computer games or announcement systems.
- Prosody, and in particular aspects of timing and emphasis. How prominently are sounds produced at specific points of an utterance, and when? How is this perceived and modeled?
- Conversational prosody and gesture. In this research area, we are interested in various aspects of multimodal communication, such as the synchronization of sounds with facial expressions and gestures, the phonetic realisation of disfluent speech and its integration in systems of human-machine interaction.

- Nico Dallmann, Leonie Schade and Petra Wganer presented our work at Interspeech 2024 in Kos, Greece. Petra recieved her award as ISCA fellow.
- We welcome our new Group members Ákos Buza (A03), Leonie Schade (A02), Daniel Duran (A02) all employed in the CRC1646
- Petra Wagner delivered a Keynote at MMSYM 2024
- We have two papers accepted at this year’s conference on Speech Prosody 2024 in Leiden
- We are excited to organize a Dagstuhl Seminar in January 2025 on „Task and Situation Aware Evaluation of Speech and Speech Synthesis“
- Petra Wagner was elected ISCA Fellow in 2024, one of the most prestigious individual awards by ISCA!
- The newly funded CRC1646 on Creativity in Communication has officially started in April 2024. Our Workgroup is part of two projects, one on „Creating novel phonetic representations across varying communication settings“ (A02), and another one on „The creative listener: Interpretation at the interface of prosody, syntax and information structure“ (A03)
- We are happy to organize a Workshop on Laughter and Other Non-Verbal Vocalisations in Belfast on the 16th and 17th of July
The Phonetics and Phonology research group is part of the Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology CITEC and Bielefeld University's Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies.
