This webpage tries to give attention to Papiamento in a sociocultural context, focussing on how the language reflects the interconnectedness of different cultures from the colonial past to the present and how this affects the belonging of Arubans. In other words, we want to analyze how Aruban history, culture and language interact with each other creating spaces of integration and conflict, that as a result, create the uniqueness of the island.

La revista electrónica inter-espacios surge en el contexto del curso de Introducción a los Estudios Interamericanos del MA InterAmerican Studies de la Universidad de Bielefeld. Esta iniciativa tiene como espíritu difundir el pensamiento y las reflexiones en torno a las problemáticas y asuntos políticos, culturales y artísticos de lo que suele llamarse Las Américas. El tema escogido para el primer número, "Nicaragua y la encrucijada del canal interoceánico" ilustra muy bien el tema específico del seminario de la Introducción IAS sobre Centroamérica como entre-espacio americano. La problemática del canal nicaragu?ense no es sólo uno de los temas más controvertidos y conflictivos de Centroamérica sino también uno que expone que, en el continente americano, Centroamérica constituye uno de los espacios in-between por antonomasia.
Together with Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panamá and Belize, Costa Rica has launched the promotional campaign 'Descubre Centroamerica' in 2012 whose aim is to stimulate interregional tourism with an inversion of $200.000. Additionally, the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism has launched the campaign "Costa Rica sin ingredientes artificiales" internationally and the campaign 'Vamos a Turistear' to encourage Costa Ricans to travel their own country. These website analyses the extent to which Ecotourism, a new concept of tourism, has been an advantage or disadvantage to Costa Rica's environment, population, and species. With an interactive map, the website shows you where ecotourism had positive impacts and shortcomings within specific regions within Costa Rica.
In the context the “Race and the Americas” seminar taught by Dr. Luz Angélica Kirschner at Bielefeld University, we engaged in research on the extraordinary indigenous people of Otavalo, Ecuador and their economic success. The Otavalos have been weavers and merchants since pre-Incan times whose handcrafted textiles and traditional music are now sold around the globe. The economic success of the Otavalos is seen by some as a “miracle”. But can we really talk about a “miracle” if the Otavalos have struggled for centuries, being conquered first by the Inca and then by the Spaniards and being exploited by their conquerors, or if the Otavalos have succeeded economically yet struggle with the racial power hierarchies in their home country Ecuador? To unravel this “miracle” we gathered background information about the people of Otavalo related to their history and culture. We then focused on textile production, tourism and music and on the questions of the extent to which indigenous identity and authenticity built up and strengthened the economy, and how this influences these branches, and, beyond this, what kind of visible or hidden racial implications there are.

Opresión que se ha manifestado desde hechos aparentemente intrascendentes hasta los abusos más crueles y alarmantes, pero que siempre han tenido el mismo fin: la supremacía de uno a costa del sometimiento del otro.
Este sitio web trata sobre la influencia que ha tenido el Vallenato en la creación de una identidad trans-nacional colombiana. Fue creado para el seminario “Globalization and the Americas” impartido por la Dra. Luz Angélica Kirschner en la Universidad de Bielefeld.
En la actualidad el vallenato es parte de lo que se considera la “colombianidad”. No obstante, la aceptación y popularidad del vallenato ha sufrido varios cambios a través del tiempo. Así, nuestro objetivo es rastrear cómo se ha desarrollado esta identidad colombiana desde finales de siglo XIX hasta la actualidad.
